Als de grond onder je voeten verdwenen is, hoe moet je dan landen, hoe krabbel je weer op? Op een podium vol matten delen zeven acrobaten de kunst van het vallen. Zonder houvast wagen ze zich in de leegte en vallen, vallen opnieuw, steeds beter. In de circusvoorstelling MAT dagen ze zichzelf en elkaar uit om risico’s te nemen want om ergens beter in te worden heb je de moed nodig om te falen. En wie verstaat de kunst van het vallen beter dan een circusartiest? Een internationale voorstelling met spectaculaire acrobatiek, over het loslaten van prestatiedruk, de schoonheid in falen en de vrijheid in het toelaten ervan.

When the ground under your feet has vanished, how do you land, how do you get back up? On a stage full of mats, seven acrobats share the art of falling. Without anything to grab onto, they venture into the void and fall, fall again, increasingly better, and better. In the circus performance MAT, they challenge themselves and each other to take risks because in order to improve yourself, you need the courage to fail. And who understands the art of falling better than a circus performer? An international performance with spectacular acrobatics about letting go of achievement pressure, the beauty in failure and the freedom to allow it.

KNOT ON HANDS

Drie atletische lichamen, drie bewegingen en de duizelingwekkende mogelijkheden. Het partner acrobatisch trio Knot on Hands werkt vanuit de onbedwingbare puls van de beweging en schept en herschept hun bewegingsmateriaal. Dan zijn er die pareltjes, een beginsel van een beweging als de bonbon van chocola die zijn vulling niet prijsgeeft, het zorgvuldig verpakte cadeau wiens vorm zich niet laat raden, dat plot gedreven verhaal waar geen eind aan komt. In de poëtisch en fysieke voorstelling CONCRETE wordt keer op keer een beweging ontrafeld die als een perpetuum mobile zonder einde is. Een productie van TENT.

Three athletic bodies, three movements and the dazzling possibilities. The partner acrobatic trio Knot on Hands works from the irrepressible pulse of movement, creating and recreating their movement material. Then there are those gems, a principle of a movement like the chocolate bonbon that does not reveal its filling, the carefully wrapped gift whose shape cannot be guessed, that plot-driven story that has no end. LILY&JANICK

Twee performers, vier lichamen. Kaleiding is een meditatief spektakel tussen hypnotiserende (steeds veranderende) vormen en nieuwe perspectieven op hedendaagse partneracrobatiek. Met een grote spiegel als podium nodigen Lily&Janick het publiek uit voor een reis in een schijnbaar perfect gebalanceerde wereld, die aanvoelt als een lange blik door een caleidoscoop. Maar wat gebeurt er als niet alles zo perfect is als het lijkt. Als je licht in het donker doet schijnen of er verschuift iets? Hoe gaan we om met veranderingen in onze omgeving en hoe lang kunnen we iets vergankelijks vasthouden? Familievoorstelling (5+).

Two performers, four bodies. Kaleiding is a meditative spectacle between hypnotising shapes and new perspectives onto contemporary partner acrobatics. With a big mirror as the stage Lily&Janick invite the audience on a journey into a seemingly perfectly balanced world, which feels like a long glance through a kaleidoscope. But what happens, when not everything is as perfect as it seems. If you bring light into darkness and something shifts? How do we cope with changes in our environment and how long can we hold onto something irreparable? Suited for families (5+).

Zes acrobaten tussen de 53 en 67 jaar betreden opnieuw het podium, terwijl ouderdom en veroudering nog steeds een taboeonderwerp is, zeker binnen de circuswereld. Net zoals topsporters, stoppen de meeste acrobaten na een bepaalde leeftijd met intensief te trainen. Hoe transformeren de meest perfecte lijven? Kan je als mens ooit vrede sluiten met je eigen lichaam? Six acrobats aged between 53 and 67 re-enter the stage, while aging is still a taboo subject and certainly within the circus world. Like top athletes, most acrobats stop training intensively after a certain age. How do the most perfect bodies transform? As a human being, can you ever make peace with your own body? Glorious Bodies is a physical, moving, and hopeful circus and dance performance about the carrying capacity of our bodies, about seeing and being seen, about the boundary between classical and contemporary circus. Deze makers en performers zijn niet lang geleden afgestudeerd en dat is niet onopgemerkt gebleven: Nathan Glaister werd genomineerd voor de BNG Bank Circusprijs 2023 met zijn dansacrobatische voorstelling Bila, an ode to the wretched. En naast het opmerkelijke duo Jam Shenanigans dat met de speelse act Shenanigans het begrip objectmanipulatie opnieuw uitvindt, presenteren we ook de winnaar van de BNG Bank Circusprijs 2023: Erik Berkey met zijn Chinese Pole en creative rigging act Structure #1.

These makers and performers have graduated not long ago and that has not gone unnoticed: Nathan Glaister was nominated for the BNG Bank Circus Prize 2023 with his dance acrobatic performance Bila, an ode to the wretched. HARVEY COBB

Nadat hij de afgelopen 5 jaar met een roze laars op zijn hoofd heeft rondgelopen, verliest Harvey Cobb (Winnaar BNG Bank Circusprijs 2022) zijn schoenen en gaat terug naar waar hij thuishoort: een oude comedy kelder. In opdracht van This is not a circus, ontwikkelt Harvey voor Klein Bellevue een late night show van Stand-Up en Circus: Barefoot. Een productie van TENT.

After spending the past 5 years with a Pink Boot on his head, Harvey Cobb (Winner of BNG Bank Circus Prize 2022) loses his shoes and goes back to where he belongs: An Old Comedy Basement. Commissioned by This is not a circus, Harvey is developing a late night show of Stand-Up and Circus for Klein Bellevue: Barefoot. A Production of TENT.

MET DE STAAT VAN HET CIRCUS

Op vrijdag 1 december 2023 opent This is not a circus met De Staat van het Circus om 20.00 uur. Jaarlijks wordt een vooraanstaand artiest gevraagd om zijn/haar visie op de staat van het circus met het publiek te delen. Dit jaar is circusmaker en acrobaat Hendrik Van Maele aan het woord.

Friday December 1th, This is not a circus opens with The State of Circus at 8pm. Each year a leading artist is asked to share his/her vision on the state of the circus with the audience. This year circus maker & acrobat Hendrik Van Maele will share his vision.

Tijdens deze professionalsdag met netwerklunch, gesprekken, workshops en performances laten we onder meer Daan Stigter (Jakop Ahlbom Company, Into the Great Wide Open) en Marjorie Boston (programmeur, De Schuur) aan het woord en presenteert Circusbende hun hernieuwbare energie-installatie rond het thema duurzaam produceren. Een panel met Kim-Jomi Alstadsæter (circus- en dansmaker, Marta & Kim), Ellen Blom (vanuit haar ervaring als agent) en een programmeur gaan een publiek gesprek aan over de gezamenlijke belangen bij circusprogrammering. SCHRIJFLAB SCHRIJVEN OVER CIRCUS
DOMEIN VOOR KUNSTKRITIEK IN SAMENWERKING MET TENT, CIRCUSSTAD, FESTIVAL CIRCOLO, CIRCUSPUNT

Het circus ontwikkelt zich als een razende. Hoe blijf je als schrijver deze duizelingwekkende ontwikkelingen bij en vat je deze veelvormige kunstdiscipline in ervaringen en woorden?

In het najaar van 2023 organiseert Domein voor Kunstkritiek in samenwerking met Circuspunt, Festival Circolo & This is not a circus een zesdaagse schrijfworkshop waarin we onder bevlogen begeleiding van een recensent, een literair schrijver en een redacteur samen onderzoeken hoe we kunnen schrijven over circus. We oefenen overdag met het schrijven van recensies, proza en persoonlijke essays en bezoeken ’s avonds met elkaar voorstellingen op de circusfestivals.

Deelnemers zijn professionele schrijvers – critici, essayisten, creative writers – uit Nederland die hun schrijfstem verder willen ontwikkelen, met een interesse in circus en met een open houding naar elkaar, bereid om naar elkaar te luisteren en feedback te geven.
